Each horse is unique and should be fed to maintain desired body condition and performance. As a complete feed, provide 1.5 to 2.0 lbs per 100 lbs body weight each day. Along with forage, feed at 0.5 to 1.0 lbs per 100 lbs body weight per day, or with a clean quality hay or pasture equivalent at 1.0 to 1.5 lb per 100lb body weight per day. Make all feeding changes gradually over a two-week period. Provide plenty of fresh, clean water at all times except to hot, tired horses. Horses should be cooled out properly before having access to unlimited water or being fed. Horses should have their feeding rate reduced when exercise is reduced. Salt should be available free choice.
